Overhead Press
EXERCISE OF THE WEEK: OVERHEAD PRESS
The overhead press is a common exercise amongst weight lifters but is an important functional exercise for EVERYONE. The obvious benefits of the overhead press are the strength benefits for the shoulder and arm musculature – but this exercise does so much more!
The overhead press works the rotator cuff and other shoulder stabilizing muscles by forcing you to maintain control of the weight as you fully extend the arm. This exercise also has awesome benefits for your core musculature as both the abdominals and back musculature are forced to work simultaneously to maintain balance and control as you move the weight overhead.
Finally, the overhead press is a functional exercise that assists with motor planning and motor control when lifting heavy objects above your head. Not being able to lift overhead is an extremely common complaint for physical therapy clients. If you are having trouble lifting overhead, call Life Changes Physical Therapy today! We will help get your lifting and function back on track.
