Pelvic Floor Therapy

Pelvic Floor Therapy may sound intimidating but it’s really not different from rehabing any other part of the body. If you have pelvic or perineal pain, pelvic pressure, incontinence of any type, or have had an injury/surgery (including vaginal and c-section delivery), then pelvic floor therapy is right for you! And here are some of the MANY things we can do for you…

Lengthen

The ability to lengthen the pelvic floor muscles is essential for going to the bathroom, pain free intercourse, breathing, and more. Many pelvic floor issues, especially pain, arise from an inability of the pelvic floor muscles to relax and lengthen. This can lead to hypertonic muscles which also become weak from staying in this shortened position and heightened state. Physical therapy can improve your ability to lengthen these muscles, and therefore improve your ability to do life without pelvic pain.

Strengthen

Pelvic floor strength is essential for supporting all of your pelvic organs, preventing bladder or bowel leakage, and transferring load through the body (like during any activity). Without adequate pelvic floor strength, you may starting noticing leakage, pelvic pressure, pelvic organ prolapse, instability, or pain. Physical therapy can improve your pelvic floor strength, eliminate incontinence, and can even help to reverse prolapse.

Coordinate

Many times the strength is there but the coordination is not. If your pelvic floor is not coordinated with your brain to turn on and off at the appropriate times it can lead to urinary/fecal incontinence or retention, prolapse issues, pain, inefficient breathing, and difficulty performing your normal daily tasks. Physical therapy can help improve your brain/body connection to utilize your pelvic floor more effectively and get rid of symptoms like pain, pressure, and leaking.

Stabilize

When the pelvic floor is not working efficiently or effectively whether due to true weakness or lack of coordination, we often feel unstable in our pelvis, low back, and core. Physical therapy can improve pelvic stability to improve your ability to exercise and perform your daily tasks without pain or weakness.

Educate

You just don’t know what you don’t know, and I guarantee most people are lacking when it comes to what they know about their pelvic floor. We can and would love to educate you on all things pelvic floor, pelvic health, good bladder and bowel habits, good sexual habits, and SO MUCH MORE! The more knowledge you have the better you can take care of your body for many years to come!
