Did you know that the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology have recently reaffirmed their previous recommendation for exercise during pregnancy?! This means we are continuing to see more research supporting exercise during pregnancy due to the positive effects on mom and baby with minimal to no risks!
So let’s break it down a little bit to better understand these recommendations.
Similar to the recommendations for the average American, ACOG recommends pregnant women get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on a weekly basis. This can be broken down into 20-30 minute intervals throughout the week and can be anything from a brisk walk to resistance training to dancing.
And remember when we thought that exercise was only safe for those already exercising before pregnancy – FALSE! We now know that exercise is safe and beneficial even if it’s new to you as long as you have the right guidance along the way!
ACOG recommends you have an evaluation by a medical professional – which can include a Doctor of Physical Therapy that specializes in pregnancy and postpartum! With low risk pregnancies, you may need little more than recommendations from your physical therapist on exercise modifications to make throughout your pregnancy. If you’re new to exercise or have any complications, you may need recommendations along with observation and assessment to make sure your exercise is safe and effective. Finally with higher risk pregnancies, you may need regular guidance and supervision from a Doctor of Physical Therapy while exercising.
Regardless of pregnancy type, exercise during pregnancy can have major benefits for mom and baby including lower risk of gestational diabetes, gestational hypertensive disorders, cesarean births, and preterm births. Exercising regularly during pregnancy can also help to improve aches and pains as well as improve the postpartum recovery and function during and after pregnancy.
