Let’s get functional, functional!

This exercise is often known as the “suitcase carry” or “briefcase carry”, but if you’re a new mom like me, just think of it as the “car seat carry”. Do you know that feeling of lugging your car seat across the parking lot or through a store with your body lurching in all directions as your muscles fatigue and feeling like you may not last another minute? Well then this exercise is for you!

The suitcase carry is a full body, functional exercise that works everything from our big quad and gluteal muscles to the small muscles of our hand needed for grip strength. Because the load is only on one side, the core is especially challenged to maintain and upright posture. Performing this exercise regularly can help improve movement patterns and strength for activities like carrying car seats, bags, big purses, groceries, and so much more.

HOW TO PERFORM:

Begin standing up tall with a challenging weight or kettlebell in one hand. Engage the core and scapular muscles to set your upright posture then begin walking slowly and controlled without allowing the trunk to shift or lean. If the exercise seems too easy, add weight, increase your distance, or video yourself to make sure your trunk is not moving.
