So you’ve booked your appointment and now you’re anxiously awaiting your in-home physical therapy visit. First off, don’t stress and give yourself a pat on the back for taking this step in healing or improving your body and your life! And to qualm those nerves just a bit, I wanted to lay out what you can expect during your in-home physical therapy session.
1️⃣ The Doctor of Physical Therapy will show up at your door with all the necessary equipment – table, sheets, exercise bands, weights, cupping set, gloves, wipes, and of course, a smile!
2️⃣ We will set up wherever you feel most comfortable. This can be in your bedroom, living room, baby’s room, office, kitchen, or even patio – it’s completely up to you! We don’t need a lot of space and we will make whatever you’ve got work for us!
3️⃣ You and the physical therapist will sit down and talk. It is essential for us to get to know one another to help me understand what is going on with you, to make our time together valuable for you, to give you the care you need and deserve, and to allow you to understand your role in your own care.
4️⃣ We will get our bodies moving! As a physical therapist, I take a full body approach to treatment – therefore, we will be moving our whole bodies. During the evaluation, this allows me to assess how you move and where/why your symptoms are coming on. During our follow-up visits, this allows us to see where you’re at, the progress we’ve made, and is where we put in a lot of the work to get you better. As your guide, I will always demonstrate movements and exercises, be right there to watch and cue your movements, and educate you on how to feel the right form and to progress safely outside of our visits together.
5️⃣ The Doctor of Physical Therapy will feel your body. If you are comfortable with physical touch, I will feel your muscles and joints in and around the area of symptoms. I believe in the healing power of touch and therefore feel its important to give your body manual treatment as well as movement. This may include massage, soft tissue mobilization, deep tissue work, myofascial release, joint mobilizations, or even passive movement.
6️⃣ I always want to leave with you feeling confident in what we have done and where we are going from here, so we always end by discussing any questions or concerns you may have on what we did and what to do until your next visit. Then we schedule our follow-up appointment and I leave you to enjoy the remainder of your day feeling better than when I arrived!
Hope this helps to give you an idea of what to expect for your in-home therapy session and helps to give you the courage to book your appointment today!
