Now that you know a little about Life Changes Physical Therapy and your Doctor of Physical Therapy, let’s talk about Pelvic Floor Therapy!
First off, pelvic floor therapy (like all physical therapy) is not one size fits all. Your session will be personally constructed to fit your symptoms, your needs, and your goals. But to give you a better idea of what you’re getting into, lets give you a quick overview of what to expect!
⭐️ Talking with the Physical Therapist
-This gives the therapist a better idea of what’s going on, what treatment you need, how to support you in reaching your goals. Talking with one another also allows us to address and overcome mental, emotional, or environmental factors that may be contributing to your pain or dysfunction. Communication with your therapist essential throughout your therapy session to make sure you are getting the most both physically and mentally from your sessions!
⭐️ Education from an Expert
-Rather than getting tips/tricks from another mom on IG, you will receive education on pelvic floor function, body function, lifestyle modification, exercise prescription, etc that is based on current research, a deep understanding of anatomy and physiology, and years of experience treating patients similar to you!
⭐️ Internal/External Pelvic Floor Exam & Treatment
-If indicated, we can do internal and external pelvic floor muscle and nerve assessment and treatment which requires no speculum like a gynecological exam! This is a great tool to allow your pelvic floor specialist to really identify what is creating your symptoms and treat the immediate area of dysfunction BUT internal exam and treatment is never required if you are not comfortable with this type of treatment.
⭐️ Connection & Coordination
-Treatment will often including working on breathing and learning to build a mind-body connection for greater control of pain, symptoms, and function! This work can help us to release tension in areas we may be holding, improvement our muscle engagement with movement, and allow us to finally use those deep core and pelvic floor muscles beneficially!
⭐️ Movement
-Pelvic floor therapy should never focus on the pelvic floor in isolation. Why? Because our pelvic floor doesn’t work in isolation. It is only one part of a much larger system. So in your pelvic floor therapy, we will also be watching you move, getting you moving, and improving your movement. This may include stretching, mobility work, strengthening, and functional activity!
