I’ve been getting this question a lot lately and wanted to clear up this misconception – pelvic floor therapy is NOT only for those experiencing pregnancy, early postpartum, or years into motherhood.
Everyone has a pelvic floor (yes men, even you!) and therefore, everyone has the potential to have pelvic floor dysfunction. The pelvic floor is a muscle group and like any other muscle group can become tight, tense, weak, uncoordinated which can contribute to issues like pain, incontinence, pressure, or difficulty doing your daily tasks.
The pelvic floor has many functions with some of the most important being support of the pelvic and abdominal organs, sphincteric control over bowel and bladder elimination, stability of the pelvis and low back, s3xual, and assistance with blood and fluid flow through the body. You may notice that pregnancy and childbirth is not even on that list. Sure, these are vulnerable times for the pelvic floor due to increased demand but it is really the interruption of these functions that signifies pelvic floor dysfunction – not the pregnancy or postpartum status itself.
Some other risk factors of pelvic floor dysfunction may include a change in body weight or weight distribution, a change in activity such as increased high impact activity or weight lifting, or even an increase in stress in your life.
